This Week in Baseball – Trade Rumors, Giants GM, Mauer Retires, Yankees Signings, Verlander Baby
Traders in Our Midst…
The baseball hot stove is all fired up and cooking up some intriguing trade rumors. All-Star third baseman Kris Bryant is being shopped around by the Cubs, left flamethrower James Paxton is drawing interest for the Mariners and the Indians may have former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber on the block. Meanwhile the Orioles are trying to sell an ’85 Chevy Impala with bald tires.
Farhan Stays West…
The San Francisco Giants have hired Los Angeles Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi to be their president of baseball operations. He takes over a team with a bloated payroll and one of the oldest rosters in the league. First order of business is remodeling the team’s shuffleboard and bingo parlor.
And Twins…
Joe Mauer has announced his retirement after a 15-season run with the Minnesota Twins. Mauer started his career as one of the best offensive catchers in baseball, but injuries and age pushed him over to first base and DH duties. Oh well, guess he’ll just have to live with being one of the team’s all-time favorite players and a multi-millionaire.
Yankee Go Home…
Brett Gardner and CC Sabathia have re-signed with the New York Yankees—each with a one-year deal. Gardner looks like he’ll be the team’s fourth outfielder, while Sabathia should help eat up innings in the starting rotation. No, we are not going to do an eating joke about CC. Shame on you!
Baby on Board…
Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander and his wife supermodel Kate Upton had a baby girl this week. Verlander was there for the birth, but times have changed, and after six innings they brought in a reliever.
