This Week in Baseball – Trade Deadline, World Series Odds, Mets Loss, Altuve DL, Haboob
More Like Trade Alive-line…
The MLB Trade Deadline ended on July 31st and there were a whirlwind of last minute trades between teams. This was one of the most active trade deadlines in recent years. Teams that have decided that it’s time to look forward to next year traded their moveable assets to the teams that are Playoff contenders and also the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Odds and Ends…
According to Vegas, the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers have the best odds to win the World Series. As of August 1st, both teams are tied at the top with 9/2 odds of winning it all. Mathematicians are still calculating the odds for the Mets to win.
Totally Mets’d Up…
When shortstop Jose Reyes took the mound in the 8th inning things were already going south for the Mets, then they continued to get worse. The Mets got pounded by the Washington Nationals to the tune of 25-4. You know it’s a bad game when you have to use a position player to pitch. And you know it’s a Mets game when that position player pitches just like one of your regular pitchers.
First Time for Everything…
For the first time in his amazing career, Jose Altuve, the reigning American League MVP, is headed to the 10-day disabled list. Altuve has been putting up un-MVP numbers for the Astros this season. One could say he’s coming up short.
Haboob Job…
The Rangers and Diamondbacks had a power outage in Arizona, which forced the game to be delayed more than 21 minutes before play resumed. It was a haboob—a massive dust storm that carries with it thunder and lightning. For players it was an utter surprise but they kept abreast of the situation and hoped it didn’t bust up the game.
