This Week In Baseball – MLBPA, Marlins, Yawkey Way, Lincecum, Phillies
Cry Me A River…
The MLBPA filed a grievance against four teams’ use of revenue sharing funds. In an effort to try to make sense of the unusually economical spending by teams this off-season, the Players’ Association accused the Athletics, Rays, Pirates and Marlins of not properly investing the funds they received from wealthier teams. And apparently the excuse of “we are bad teams” was not enough.
Sign of the Times…
Miami-Dade County says it has no plans to remove the home-run sculpture from Marlins Park. The gawdy outfield display is considered an eyesore and almost nearly as upsetting to look at as the Miami Marlins.
There Are Some Who Call Me Tim
After working hard all off-season to bounce back from a difficult return to the majors last season, the Texas Rangers agreed to terms with Tim Lincecum. This comes as a surprise to many because marijuana is not legal in Texas, but we can safely assume that he will make his debut on 4/20.
A Road by Any Other Name…
The Boston Red Sox filed a petition to change Yawkey Way to Jersey Street. The team felt this move was necessary to create an environment of inclusion due to former owner Tom Yawkey’s alleged history of racism. This is what he gets for never winning a championship.
Out of Left Field…
The Philadelphia Phillies are planning to try some unique outfield shifts in 2018. In an attempt to maximize some players’ defense ability and minimize some players’ inability, the team is planning on shifting left and right fielders to help create a defensive advantage. No word yet on when they are planning on fielding a good team.
