Episode 86: MLB Hot Stove Heating Up?; Josh Donaldson; James Paxson; Joe Mauer; Adrian Beltre; Stan Lee; Catherine Zeta-Jones
First and foremost, do you think the MLB hot stove is heating up or still cold? Jed wants some high-flying action—what say you?
Episode 86 of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast has no companion name since no player in MLB history has ever worn number 86 on the field of play at the major league level. Sad. Also sad is that hosts Jed Rigney and Jon Sumple have not podcasted for three weeks, so it’s about friggin’ time. What’s not sad in this week’s Headlines is the pilot light has been fired up for MLB hot stove season with a flutter of activity in recent weeks. The Mariners traded James Paxton and Mike Zunino during their self-proclaimed reboot (with Robinson Canó soon to follow), the Yankees sent top pitching prospect Justus Sheffield to the Mariners for the Big Maple, the Braves signed Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann (for old time’s sake), the Reds resigned closer Raisel Iglesias and the rumors are flying about who’s going where and when. So many rumors, you’ll just have to listen!
Since we were away for sooo long, there’s an awards season recap, too, followed by Joe Mauer and Adrian Beltre retiring, Seibu Lions’ pitcher Yusei Kikuchi posting, the commish getting a contract extension through 2024 for making it rain, Red Sox players getting $416,000 for a full share of World Series winnings, Baby Ruth getting a Medal of Freedom (why not!), MLB asking for its campaign contribution back, the Royals hiring Mike Matheny as a special advisor to assure their losing ways, Jose Bautista having a beetle named after him, Chris Archer getting hernia surgery and MLB striking its first gaming partnership with MGM.
This week’s Starting Nine is in honor of the late, great Stan Lee with nine players with Stan Lee character names. The show wraps with Extra Innings and a look outside the baseball world at Le’veon Bell deciding to sit out the entire NFL season, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West using a 747 for a private flight (just because), Catherine Zeta-Jones sharing that she and Michael Douglas have a open relationship (no surprise, really), and a Texas female wedding photographer getting arrested for having sex with a wedding guest and urinating on a tree.
