Episode 55: Parkland; Snapple; Cubs land Yu Darvish; svelte Matt Kemp; Jake Peavy returns; derogatory heckling crackdown; Grace and Frankie (or Frankie and Johnny)
First and foremost, our hearts go out to all those affected by the senseless shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. The feature image with this post is Douglas grad Anthony Rizzo attending the vigil in his hometown of Parkland on Thursday.
Episode 55 of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast starts off somber. Host Jon Sumple attended Sandy Hook Elementary back in the day, and his son attended Douglas a decade ago. Both tragedies hit close to home, but Jed Rigney does his best to move the show forward with some thoughts on the HBO show “Grace and Frankie,” which the uninformed hosts refer to as “Frankie and Johnny” repeatedly throughout the show. Just go with it.
There’s also plenty of talk about Snapple as a the new official ice team of MLB before we get into this week’s Headlines, which include Yu Darvish signing with the Cubs, pitchers and catchers reporting, private camp for the unsigned, Matt Kemp dropping 40 pounds, Chris Russo dissing the Astros and the reaction from fans, Yasiel Puig getting dumped by his agency, Chase Field getting a humidor (for baseballs), Jake Peavy hoping to bounce back from a rough few years, crack down on derogatory fan heckling, Esteban Loaiza getting nabbed with 20 kilos of drugs, and the ACES sports agency being sued for providing steroids to players.
This week’s Starting Nine is in honor of the Winter Olympics and features players with Winter Olympic sports names. Around the Horn is back with a rapid-fire look at every MLB team and whether they’ll be over or under FanGraphs’ Win Projections.
Extra Innings, a look outside the baseball world, features the stunning upset at the Westminster Dog Show (and all the craziness surrounding dog shows), Lenny Dykstra’s claim that Charlie Sheen will soon be taken down by the Feds, and Elon Musk launching a Tesla into space and what it means for mankind.
