Episode 53: Breaking now-old news — Christian Yelich traded; Hall of Fame announcements; Scott Boras’ mouth; Detroit’s D; A-Rod; Super Bowl; Oscars
First and foremost, Christian Yelich was traded mere minutes before we recorded Episode 53; thus, the extra pep in our voices.
Baseball is back in Episode 53 of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast! After what seemed like months of trying to make piddly transactions sound interesting and no-news-is-bad-news dry spells, we finally got a decent transaction to banter about. And regular listeners will notice we don’t spend the first 10-15 minutes talking about everything but baseball; we’re talking baseball three minutes into the show!
The Christian Yelich trade kicks off this week’s Headlines. Good trade for the Brewers, and the Marlins finally got it right, picking up four prospects, including blue-chipper Lewis Brinson, who returns home to South Florida. If we had recorded the show an hour later, we could have also reported the Brew Crew’s signing of Lorenzo Cain, who Jed assures during our show won’t sign with the Brewers due to an already stocked outfield. Who’s on the move now — Ryan Braun or Domingo Santana?
The Hall of Fame announcements were a little ho-hum because the electees — Chipper Jones, Jim Thome, Vladimir Guerror and Trevor Hoffman — were expected to get in. Jed and Jon also discuss Scott Boras making waves again with his big mouth, the Randal Grichuk trade from the Cardinals to Toronto, Roy Halladay’s toxicology findings, the Tigers dropping the “Old English D” on home unis, the vandalization of the Field of Dreams location in Iowa and A-Rod joining ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball broadcast team for 2018.
This week’s Starting Nine honors the retiring Neil Diamond, featuring players with Diamond song names. And, yes, Shin-Soo Choo is back for a sixth week in a row!
As usual, the episode wraps with Extra Innings taking a look outside the world of baseball at the Patriots and Eagles big wins, Vince McMahon bringing the XFL back in 2020, Oscar nominations and Kylie Jenner preparing for “extreme privacy,” and what that really means in Kardashian-speak.
