First and foremost, our thoughts go out to all those suffering through the horrible Houston flooding and destruction along the Texas coast.
On Episode 36 of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast, Jed Rigney’s state of jet lag means laughs galore for listeners, thanks to the voices in his head, incoherent sentences and coffee. Headlines start the show with a nod to the despair in Texas and the Houston flooding that forced the Astros to play a home game in St. Petersburg, creating a silver-lining for Tampa Bay area baseball fans. In the spirit of “water,” the M’s acquired Mike Leake to help stop their “leaky” rotation. Giancarlo Stanton makes the Marlins relevant, for now, with his assault on 60 HRs, Rhys Hoskins sets the record for the fastest to 11 HRs for a rookie, and Byron Buxton hits three dingers in one game to show he’s not all about the D, so to speak. Chris Sale, to Jed’s disbelief, is the quickest pitcher to 1,500 career Ks, Clayton Kershaw is due to return to help the “struggling” Dodgers and Trea Turner returns to the Nats for the stretch run. Brewers minor leaguer Julio Mendez suffers a cardiac even after getting hit in the chest by a pitch and Japan wins the Little League World Series over team USA from Texas.
Starting Nine this week is a tribute to the LLWS featuring nine players with teen heartthrob names. Jed’s heart didn’t seem to be into it — much like Mendez’s.
This week’s Seventh Inning Stretch focuses on fantasy movies of the non-adult kind. Jed loves Lord of the Rings and has little love for The Hobbit. He also shares a harrowing childhood experience about the Sword and the Sorcerer. Are You Buying It? features NL Wild Card teams, with the D-backs in the driver’s seat and Rockies holding on over the Brewers.
Episode 36 wraps with Extra Innings and discussions about Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, Game of Thrones season finale and the preponderance of hardcore fan podcasts, Selena Gomez’s hacked Instagram account leading to nude Justin Bieber photos that Jed has no interest in (really), and Kathy Griffin ending her friendship with Anderson Cooper.
