Episode 32: Trade deadline deals, Clayton Kershaw DL, Rafael Devers call-up, Jameson Taillon meltdown, A-Rod in a dress?
Clayton Kershaw’s injury is killing me, Smalls!
Episode 32 of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast was completed glitch-free! Thank you Lord of Skype and Master of Chrome! It also marks the first episode recorded at 8:30 a.m. (PDT) on the same day it’s released. We’ve got that going for us, which is nice.
This week is chock full of Headlines — 50 minutes worth, so let’s get to it. Jed Rigney and Jon Sumple continue their pre-trade deadline diatribes, and this week they talk about how sure they were last week that Todd Frazier was a sure-thing to the Red Sox, only to have him traded to the Yankees mere seconds after the podcast was recorded. There’s also some chat-chitting about Trevor Cahill and Brandon Maurer heading to the Royals and why that won’t turn out well for KC, a loooong evaluation of Red Sox nation and how good they should be but aren’t and how the Eduardo Nunez trade should help sure up a few holes (albeit with no power expectations, which is what Boston really needs). Clayton Kershaw’s injury screws up fantasy baseball leagues much more than it does the Dodgers, and Jed uses the lefty’s injury to go on a rant about fantasy baseball trades and the meaning of “value.” After Jon share’s a memory of seeing the Red Sox jump out to 9-0 lead at Yankee Stadium behind Roger Clemens only to lose 10-9, Jed douses that negativity with his eternal love (not) for Aaron Boone and Boston’s comeback from the brink in 2004 to win it all. Jed felt so much better! There’s this week’s installment of As The Mets Turn, with reports that New York is keeping top prospect Ahmed Rosario in the minors to avoid the toxic MLB clubhouse, a Nationals’ affiliate throwing back-to-back no-nos in a double header (first time ever!) and the mess that is the Giants, complete with another Jed rant on how bad things are in the City by the Bay — so bad, that Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” no longer is played at home games.
This week’s Starting Nine features players with “Game of Thrones”-related names — the best being Dan Norris Targaryen. New segment Is It Just Me? features yet another rant from Jed about how there seems to be a rash of managers leaving starters in too long this season, evidenced by Jameson Taillon’s meltdown at the Giants. Don’t MLB managers realize fantasy managers are affected by this nonsense? C’mon, man!
Episode 32 wraps with Extra Innings and Jon’s explanation of his “Jordan Spieth, are you kidding me?” FB post on Sunday, Kyrie Irving’s demand to leave Cleveland (like who wouldn’t want to leave?), and Michael Phelps racing a mechanical shark (yawn) and how cool it would be to have a reality show based on man vs. hungry animals for realz. Finally the headline “Jennifer Lopez celebrates birthday with A-Rod in a sexy, see-though dress” has Jed wondering why A-Rod was dressed in drag.
