Episode 20 and counting! Jed Rigney and Jon Sumple shoot the breeze on a variety of baseball and non-baseball topics on this week’s edition of Foul Territory: A Baseball Podcast, including the big news of the week: the Starling Marte suspension for 80 games, which puts the Pirates in a significant hole. Jed and Jon kick off with this week’s Headlines, talking about Jackie Robinson Day and the confusion caused by fields filled with players wearing No. 42, the Baby Bombers winning eight in a row and looking pretty competitive without major contributions from Greg Bird and Gary Sanchez, the gamesmanship behind the new 10-day DL rule, Derek Jeter and Jeb Bush uniting in an effort to purchase the Marlins, a cat running amok during a Miami-Braves game, someone with a pocketful of cash purchasing 1st base from last year’s World Series game seven for $100k, and the stupidity of miking umpires for replay decision announcements — unless done by Enrico Palazzo or via slow jam. And Jed’s on-the-spot poetry slam is a reason alone to listen to this episode.

Last week’s Starting Nine featured the NHL, and this week Jed digs deep with some “creative” takes on baseball players with NBA player names in honor of the NBA playoffs getting underway.

Jed then introduces the ever-evolving 3Up-3Down, which transformed to Hot or Not?, which now has officially morphed into Are You Buying It? The newish segment focuses on players who are having significantly good or bad stats and whether Jed thinks they’ll be able to sustain said goodness or badness. This week focuses on Eric Thames, James Paxton, Avisail Garcia, Ervin Santana, Francisco Lindor and Rick Porcello. Jed is buying big on three of the six.

The show ends with Extra Innings and two big headlines from earlier in the day: the surprising suicide of former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on the day New England visits the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl victory and the not-so-surprising firing of Bill O’Reilly from FOX News for being creepy. There’s also a brief discussion of the Boston Marathon and the first woman runner in the race’s history returning to run again; some ripping on the New York Knicks, Phil Jackson and Carmelo Anthony; and befuddlement over Julia Roberts being named the most beautiful girl in the world.
